We are halfway through 2019, and what a year it has been so far! Its July which means the cold has set in, the creative onesies are out and as expected Joburg is bustling with exciting events to keep you entertained. It may be winter but it’s time to get off the couch, reset those social calendars and put on your best thermal socks and underwear. After all, dancing with your mates and having a ball is the best way to stay warm and forget about the chill.

Here are epic events you don’t want to miss in the City of Gold this month.

#1 Oasis Experience Live in the Garden 2019

The Oasis Experience Live in the Garden has returned for another day of absolute musical bliss. This event never disappoints and always delivers an unforgettable outdoor festival experience that the entire family will enjoy. With the stunning backdrop of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, energetic sounds of local talent, gourmet coffee and delicious food, the Oasis Experience is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on every festival-goer.

What to Expect

All festival-goers are in for a treat with the amazing line up of live entertainment. Some of South Africa’s top performers such as Tresor, Majozi, Locnville, TiMO ODV, The Kiffness, Easy Freak, Kyle Watson and Jethro Tait will be lighting up the stage with all your favourite tracks to keep you dancing for hours on end.

Prepare for your taste buds to be tantalized with gourmet food and drinks that will be available from food trucks and stalls in and around the gardens.

Got young kids? No stress! Children of all ages will also have something to look forward to with the new and improved kids’ area complete with exciting activities to keep the fun going.

#2 East Rand Gin Festival 2019

Craft gin and tonic lovers from all over the city, mark your calendars now because this is an event you don’t want to miss. With over 40 distillers, live entertainment, premium tonic and gourmet food, The East Rand Gin Festival promises to deliver a day worth remembering.

What to Expect

Guests can be certain that the day will be nothing short of exciting. Gin lovers are spoilt for choice when it comes to the number of breweries and distillers that will be showcasing their craft. The beautiful garden of the Birchwood Hotel has ample space for families and friends to picnic around – camping chairs, umbrellas and picnic blankets are welcome.

Music lovers are in for a treat with live performances from Watershed, Jerry and the Bandits, Zebra, Jacques Mouton, Bianca Blanc and DJ Steve East.

To top it all off there will also be roaming entertainers, a live fire show (TBC) as well as a cosy bonfire for all to huddle around when the temperature starts to drop.  

Children of all ages can also look forward to various fun-filled activities, a jumping castle, face painters and much much more.

#3 Currie Cup 2019 Premier Division

The Currie Cup is almost here are rugby fans from far and wide will be gathering together to watch the action live. Kick-off starts on the 12th of July at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium, where the defending champions, The Sharks will go head to head in a match against the Griquas. When it comes to the Currie Cup, fans are always guaranteed a one of a kind sporting experience with all the traditional and celebratory extras that South Africa has to offer.

When and Where?

Date: Friday 12th July at 19:15 until Saturday 31st August at 17:15

Place: Jonsson Kings Park Stadium, Emirates Airline Park Stadium, DHL Newlands Stadium, Tafel Lager Park Stadium, Toyota Stadium, Mbombela Stadium, and Loftus Versfeld.

Qualifying Teams: Cell C Sharks, Tafel Lager Griquas, Phakisa Pumas, Emirates Lions, Vodacom Blue Bulls, Toyota Cheetahs, and DHL Western Province.

#4 Berg in the Burg 2019

Joburg’s largest winter electronic festival is back for another round of chaos. Berg in the Burg is the ultimate music experience for anyone who loves dazzling light displays, massive crowds, electronic beats and of course dancing the night away. This event promises to deliver on 14 straight hours of sensory bliss.

What to Expect

Berg in the Burg has never failed to impress, and this year is no different. Featuring 3 stages, 3 international guests and over 20 performances, there is something for everyone to enjoy. #5 MTN Walk The Talk With 702

Joburg’s most iconic event is back for another year. The walk caters to participants of all fitness levels and abilities, so you don’t have to worry about being a pro to enter. This event is a wonderful way to get outdoors, meet new people and walk together as a diverse community. The event is capped at 50 000 participants so make sure you register as early as possible.

What to Expect

The event features distances of 25km,15km, 8km and 5km.

The 25km walk for democracy will continue beyond historic landmarks such as Nelson Mandela Bridge and Constitution Hill, the Johannesburg Zoo, the Anglo Boer War Memorial and Zoo Lake. This walk breaks off onto Oxford road from the 15km walk and will continue alongside the M1 into Forest Town. The 8km walk will take you through the stunning suburbs around Emmerentia. The 5km walk is perfect for families with kids, prams, grandparents and even your beloved furry friend.
